Introduction: This web site brings you the electronic version of "London and its Environs Described", a set of books originally published by R. and J. Dodsley in 1761 in six volumes. I have endeavoured to recreate each page (errors included) as faithfully as possible, within the limitation of a web page. |
Why the web site?
In 1971, I found Volume IV in my attic. For years, this book has captivated and intrigued me. It is a truly fascinating document, describing London (England) and its life in the mid eighteenth century.
I thought it would be a nice idea to share this book with others who may be interested. So I started a project that was intended to make the whole book available online via this web site.
In January 2004, I managed to buy the full six volume set from an auction house in Somerset, England. Consequently, the project has now been expanded to include the complete works.

This web site uses JavaScript (to assist with navigation etc.) and Popups (in order to display Drawings).
If your web browser's security settings block these functions, some pages won't be displayed correctly.
Also, the site is tested using Internet Explorer 7. I'm aware that other web browsers don't always display
some of the pages as expected, however, the differences are usually only cosmetic in nature.
